Tractor Protection System: Your Safety Lifeline
In the heavy-duty trucking industry, the Tractor Protection System is designed with one goal: to preserve the tractor's air pressure if the trailer breaks away or a service line ruptures. In Ontario, a failure in this system is not just a mechanical issueβit is a critical safety violation that will result in an immediate Out-of-Service (OOS) order at any MTO scale.
Components of the System
The system is comprised of the dash-mounted valves and the main Tractor Protection Valve (TPV) usually mounted on the rear of the cab or the frame rail.
- Trailer Supply Valve (Red Knob): Controls the flow of air to the trailer's supply line and parking brakes.
- Parking Brake Valve (Yellow Knob): Controls the tractor's spring brakes.
- The TPV (Main Valve): Automatically shuts off air to the trailer lines when it senses a massive pressure drop, preventing the tractor's reservoirs from draining.
The MTO "Pop" Test: Mandatory Pre-Trip Step
Under Ontario safety standards, you must verify that the dash valves automatically "pop" out to the parked position when pressure drops. If they stay in, the system is defective.
The Verification Procedure:
- Park Safely: Chock the wheels and release both dash valves (push them in).
- Bleed Air: Pump the brake pedal repeatedly to reduce reservoir pressure.
- Watch the Knobs: The Trailer Supply (Red) should pop out first, followed by the Parking (Yellow). This must occur between 20 and 45 PSI.
- Final Check: Once popped, attempt to push them back in. If they won't stay in, the emergency system is successfully engaged.
Emergency Line Failure Simulation
A true "fail-safe" test involves checking the Tractor Protection Valve's ability to shut off air to a broken line. With the trailer disconnected and the dash valves pushed in, the system should allow air to escape from the gladhands until pressure reaches the shut-off threshold, at which point all flow must stop.
